Belgian quad. 11% ABV. NFL football. Seriously…how could a Thursday night get better?
For my beer of the week, I decided to bypass the endless number of beers enjoyed since last Friday night and stick to a Houston favorite, Buffalo Bayou.
I’ll admit, I’m much more of a fan of their secessionist series of beers than their heritage series. I actually find the heritage series to be less than desirable, but they make some of the best and most original bombers in their secessionist series. There are few better than Figaro, Figaro, Figaro, FIIIGAAARO.
Granted, my first real exposure to good beer as a wee young lad was through Belgian beer, so I enjoy it when a local brewery presents their take on a classic style. If you are looking for a St. Bernardus-type beer that is brewed in Texas, give this a shot. I catch a nice flavor of dates and figs in this brew with the fruitiness in the malt coming through on the first taste.
As a high-alcohol beer, it was nice to be able to share my bomber with my wife, who enjoyed half of the bottle. However, I was able to get two snifter’s worth of this brew. Overall, it’s a solid effort from Buffalo Bayou and I found it to be almost as comparable as Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #13, which is one of the best Belgian quads I’ve had from Texas in quite a while. The bonus for this beer is its year-round availability, where as DR 13 is gone.
