As our friend, Jose Luis Cubria, said in his article in Houston Beer Guide, it’s delicious but confusing.
What I will focus on is all of the good aspects of the beer because the flavor is tremendous. The cane sugar that is added in the brew gives it the level of sweetness that is complimented well by the vanilla and bourbon flavors that are strong throughout the nose. Also, a molasses and fig flavor only add to that sweetness.
The bourbon barrel-aging is a bit strong. I’m a fan of beers with this sort of longer barrel-aging, but it may be a bit overpowering for some. I’d be curious to see how the flavor is possibly different in bottles as I have only enjoyed this on draught. Most of the feedback I’ve heard on this beer has been mixed. Personally, I loved it and believe that it’s a hit that does barrel-aging right.
It’s not quite as bold as other quads I’ve enjoyed which is why I don’t quite consider it as such. However, if that’s not important and you’re only considering taste, this is a winner in my book.
