Beer of the Week – New Braunfels Brewing Mexican Cannon

Mexican CannonSour beers aren’t for everyone. Honestly, we didn’t really enjoy sours until about a year ago after resisting for quite a while. For us, sours are essentially the polar opposite of a session beer, with challenging and complex layers of flavors. There are some great ones and some terrible ones out on the market, so the hit and miss ratio makes it hard to find any regulars that can become one of your go-to beers.

Fortunately, we made our way to Houston and took a trip to D&Q Beer Station to check out the selection that many of our friends consider one of the best in town. One of the beers we picked up was New Braunfels Brewing Company’s Mexican Cannon, which turned out to be a very interesting decision.

This salty lime flavored beer has the background of a gose, but using their LuftWeiss hefeweizen as the beer’s base allows for the clove flavor to also be evident throughout each sip. The lime peels that are part of the fermentation process allow this beer to taste just like the Limon salt that you find at many Mexican restaurants and shops.

We noticed on RateBeer.com that this beer had a poor rating, but we think it’s because many are expecting a wheat beer and receiving a sour. If you’re looking for a sharp sour beer with a salty finish, this is definitely for you. Many of our friends who enjoy sours are either in love with this beer or do not like this at all. Ultimately, if you enjoy gose beers and enjoy lime flavor, this will become one of your favorites.
