The first time I tried this beer, I was blown away. This small brewery from Seguin showed up at Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival in Galveston during Labor Day weekend and brought this gem with them. Once I tried it, I started to obsess over it. I needed another one…a full one. Not just a small sample (even though I had 3), but a full pint.
Fortunately, my travels took me to Austin and where better to buy craft beer than WhichCraft Beer Store? Walking into this craft beer haven can be overwhelming for a novice, but I feel like a kid in a candy store. Browsing the shelves for anything good, I see this four-pack just sitting there…lonely, and ready for somebody to buy it. There it is, BS Brewing’s Pecan Ale with Honey. The nectar that was haunting my thoughts was staring at me, waiting to be purchased.
Now that I acquired this, I had to force myself to wait and bring it home so my wife could also enjoy it. After all, she believes the same thing about this beer: it’s amazing and we need more of it in our face.
I crack the 16 ounce can open, pour it in my pint glass and just stare at it for a bit. The reddish brown color gives off a look of liquid caramel. The taste doesn’t miss a beat as it also has a honey sweetness gives off a taste of soft and chewy caramel. The pecans are feint and almost non-existent, but the vanilla that is added gives it that extra level of smoothness to mellow it out. It’s a unique Braggot style that gives you the feeling that you’re drinking beer, even though it’s closer to a honey mead.
The canned version doesn’t disappoint, but now I’m curious to try it on draft again. I want to see if the pecan flavor comes through more when pouring from the keg. Either way, I’m excited to drink more of this and with their pending distribution to the San Antonio area, we should start seeing more of it out in bars and stores in Central/South Texas.
