I was never much of a sour beer fan until about two years ago. One of the first I ever liked was Texian’s Charlie Foxtrot sour wheat ale. Ever since then, I’ve been a fan of the brews Texian pumps out as they are one of the more consistent sour brewers out there with Jester King and Blue Owl.
Texian Brewing recently came out with a limited run new apricot sour called Aurora. I’ve been looking high and low for it, but missed out on it when it was originally released. Fortunately, the last time I visited the Corner Food Mart in Friendswood, they had it sitting there, front and center, just waiting for me to snatch it up.
My problem with bombers is I rarely feel in the mood to sit down and drink the entire thing. My wife isn’t much of a sour lover, so I’ve been sitting on it for a couple of days, trying to find the right time to try it. Lately, I’ve been craving fresh fruit and after browsing through Froberg Farms’ Facebook page gazing at the fresh strawberries, I was finally ready to drink the whole thing.
Waiting makes the heart grow fonder. This apricot sour was executed flawlessly. As part of their Wild Texas series, Aurora is a golden sour aged on apricots and oak chips. While the apricot is feint, but evident, the oak chips are non-existent to me. That doesn’t mean it’s not a delicious beer as it is tart with a pineapple flavor.
There’s no doubt that if this beer is made again, I will be getting more of it. However, since it’s rotation life is just about up, take every chance you get to give it a shot.
