In a little more than three weeks, firkins will converge on Hennessy Park adjacent to Saint Arnold Brewing Company. The third annual Houston Firkin Fest, presented by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, will offer craft beer lovers an unbelievable opportunity to try one-of-a-kind brews by a slew of Texas craft brewers.
The Texas craft brewers that will be attending include: Real Ale, Saint Arnold, Freetail, Deep Ellum, Brigadoon, (512), Cycler’s, Karbach, No Label, 8th Wonder, Lone Pint, New Republic, Southern Star, Brazos Valley, and Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company.
So the question is, “what is a firkin?” A firkin is a small cask filled with delicious beer. The way you tap the firkin is by hammering the spout into the firkin. The difference is the brews are pure – the cask is kept free of air and there is no artificial carbon dioxide added to the brew meaning the only carbonation is natural and the fermentation is natural. For me, cask-conditioned beer tastes better, so this festival embraces all that is natural and pure about Texas craft beer.
