A Friday afternoon. Conference? Done. Time to drive to Dallas, but first, I wanted to stop by a craft brewery that is trying to make a difference for others throughout the state.
If you’ve been following the #SueTABC campaign, you know that Grapevine Craft Brewery (along with Deep Ellum Brewing Company) is involved in a lawsuit against the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission pertaining to the right to sell their beer to-go from their premises. Currently, their taproom serves pints and sells bottles for consumption on-site, but you cannot fill a growler and take it home due to their production brewery license.
Their stand against TABC is inspirational and is what made me interested them as a brewery. However, my visit to their taproom helped me understand why they have experienced such rapid growth. Between the patrons wanting to learn about craft beer, the welcoming and friendly staff, and the unbelievable facility, there is no doubt they will reach 10,000 barrels of production per year within no time.
I started out with their Hopfest IPA, a 6.5% ABV very hoppy IPA. The citrus flavor pops and you certainly get quite a bit of the hops coming through. This was the first time I’ve seen this beer available as it’s currently not canned orĀ available in my area as well as the fact that I’ve yet to see it at any pubs.
Finally, my next beer was so good, I had to drink it twice. It was new release day and the beer slated for new release was their Stocking Stuffer Winter Warmer golden amber. This 9.0% ABV beer was very aromatic and it helped the toffee flavor explode on each sip. An unbelievable beer.
What I found the most enjoyable about the trip was the hospitality of the entire staff. From the bartenders just asking about the beer selection in Galveston to an unexpected beer chat with owner Gary Humble. I mentioned that I was in town for work and he asked all about my local brewery, even giving me a sticker to take back to Galveston Island Brewing. The level of commitment to their customers is unrivaled and this is a place you must visit if you’re ever up in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. You will not only drink terrific beers, but you’re also certain to meet friendly people who will make you feel welcome.
