Have you ever built up an idea about something and once realized, felt disappointed? Unfortunately, that’s how I felt about Le Petit Prince by Jester King. As someone who appreciates all of the different flavors you can capture simply by changing a recipe slightly (adding more hops, using different barley, types of yeast, etc), I felt like this beer missed the mark.
As a farmhouse saison, it is a very light and sessionable beer. At 2.9% ABV, it is designed as a table beer to be drank socially with friends and family over long periods of time. However, for a saison, it was very bland and only slightly tasty. With a hint of lemon, it comes across as a weak, grainy lemonade flavor.
It does not leave any lingering bitterness or flavor and washes down clean. However, from a taste standpoint, I believe the opportunity to make a flavorful, full-bodied saison was missed.
This is in no way a reflection of Jester King as a whole as they continuously push the envelope and make terrific, edgy beers. But overall, I believe I expected much more from this brew.
Tim I agree with you on this beer. I’ve had a number of Jester King beers and this is probably the only one I won’t have again.
