There are only a handful of places on Galveston Island that do craft beer well. Fortunately, Beerfoot Brewery is one of them. In addition to having two to three in-house brews available at all times, they typically have a stellar selection of both Texas and U.S. craft beers that are a mix of difficult to find and favorites for drinkers like myself.
The Texas offerings are obviously the ones I enjoy the most. On tap were a variety of beers ranging from local favorites like Southern Star Bombshell Blonde to the more difficult to find No Label Perpetual Peace. Not to mention the terrific offerings of canned and bottled beers with Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #15 and Southern Star Black Crack to name a few.
To take advantage of the first sunshine in days and leave the house was a must. To start off, I ordered a Brash Pussy Wagon IPA. This hoppy as Hell IPA was so overpoweringly bitter that it was difficult to enjoy. I like an IPA with a high IBU number, but with this at 115 IBU, it was a bit much to enjoy.
Mellowing things out after getting blown up on hops, I chose No Label’s Perpetual Peace Wee Heavy. This bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale hit the spot as the vanilla flavor complemented the barrel-aging of the brew perfectly. To say that this was my favorite beer of the day would be an understatement.
Finally, I finished with Goliad’s Redfish IPA. This more sessionable and tolerable IPA was a nice way to finish the afternoon as it balanced hoppiness without being overly bitter. Plus, at only 6% ABV, it was much easier to finish off than the first two offerings of the day.
Beerfoot combines the atmosphere and laid back nature of being beachside with the sophistication of a stellar craft beer bar. If you ever make it down to the Texas Gulf Coast, this stop right on the seawall should be one of your first.
