Christmas shopping is something I will delay as long as I possibly can. Since it was the last weekend before Christmas and there were still people for whom I had not bought gifts, I found myself out and about on Sunday in Lake Jackson. After looking for a few places to grab some food and a good beer, I stumbled upon The Wayside Pub and decided to see if this place would be pretty good.
This pub tows the line between English and Irish Pub. There are decor items from both countries with a lifesize statue of the Queen’s Guard outside and many Irish-themed signs throughout the inside. However, the beer selection was pretty decent and considering I found a steal of a deal, I would consider this place a nice success.
Most of their Texas beer selection is Saint Arnold, Karbach, No Label, and Real Ale, so there aren’t many choices. The gem of the selection was Karbach Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hellfighter on tap. Now, there were two choices: either a 16 ounce pint or a 20 ounce imperial pint. This wasn’t going to be served in a snifter at this bar, so I chose the 16 ounce option. At only $6.50 for the pint, this was a pretty good value, so I was able to overlook the glass choice.
For lunch, I went ahead and got the staple dish, fish & chips. The batter was perfect for both the fish and chips and it was a very tasty choice. Also, since I was starving and forgot to take a picture beforehand, I had to show you that I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and cleaned the plate in no time.
To finish off the visit, I also went ahead and ordered a No Label El Hefe, a lighter option, instead of ordering a second BBH to ensure that I wouldn’t be smashed from drinking two 11.5% ABV brews back-to-back. The refreshing flavor of the hefeweizen cleaned the palate and allowed the day to end on a high note.
I enjoyed this place as one of the better places in Lake Jackson. There really aren’t many options with a decent craft beer selection, so I’ll be making my way back to this spot in the near future.
